Transportation Documents
Transportation Air Waybill
The air waybill (AWB), or transportation contract, is drawn up by the cargo agent or airline. The form, which is approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), contains the instructions given by the shipper and must observe the air transportation regulations of the countries involved. The conditions of the contract are printed on the reserve side of the original air waybill.
The air waybill serves to confirm the transportation contract between all parties (the shipper, carrier and consignee). It also demonstrates that the shipper has observed all his contractual obligations. In addition to serving as a receipt of payment, it is usually a required document at customs as well as for banking and other transactions. It also informs the airline how the shipment is to be handled and routed.
The country of origin or destination may require a bill of sale, consular certificates, and export and import licenses. These can be attached to the Air Waybill.
